Food Safety Standards

Surplus does not mean second-rate. These are the standards every vendor agrees to before selling.

What vendors must do

  • Hold valid business and food-handling approvals required by their county and by Kenyan law.
  • Only list food that is still safe and of good quality at the time of collection.
  • Keep hot food hot and cold food cold until handover, using appropriate storage.
  • Describe items honestly, including known allergens and the date prepared where relevant.
  • Set a pickup window that ends while the food is still good.
  • Pack food in clean, food-safe packaging.

What we do

  • Review every vendor application before a store can publish listings.
  • Enforce a maximum pickup window so nothing is listed for too long.
  • Run a moderation queue where any customer can report a listing.
  • Remove listings and strike stores when a report is upheld, with automatic suspension after three strikes.
  • Keep an audit record of every moderation decision.

What we ask of you

  • Collect within the pickup window — this is what keeps surplus food safe.
  • Eat prepared meals the same day unless the vendor says otherwise.
  • Refrigerate or freeze anything you are not eating immediately.
  • Always check the allergen information before eating, especially for surprise bags.
  • Report anything that seems wrong. Reports go straight to our moderation team.

Reporting a problem

If food arrives in poor condition, or is not as described, report the listing from its page or email hello@nourishgo.co.ke within 24 hours. Include your pickup code and a photograph if you can. Suspected foodborne illness is escalated to our operations team immediately and may be reported to the relevant county health authority.
